Who Might Need a Crown or Bridge?
Crowns and bridges are commonly recommended for people who experience:
- A broken or severely worn-down tooth
- A tooth with large cavities or cracks
- Missing teeth that need replacement
- Teeth weakened by root canal treatments
Every patient’s needs are unique, and your dentist at Sunshine Dental will discuss the best options for your specific situation.
What Is a Crown?
A crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a damaged or decayed tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns are often used when a tooth has been significantly weakened by decay, fractures, or large fillings.
By covering the tooth, crowns help protect it from further damage and restore its natural function.
What Is a Bridge?
A bridge is a type of dental restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth. It literally “bridges” the gap between your natural teeth by attaching to adjacent healthy teeth or dental implants. A bridge is made up of one or more artificial teeth held in place by crowns placed on the neighbouring teeth.
This solution helps restore your smile, prevent the shifting of surrounding teeth, and improve your ability to chew and speak properly.
The Process: What to Expect
Crown Procedure
When you come in for a crown, we’ll begin by preparing the affected tooth. This involves cleaning out any decay and shaping the tooth to make sure that the crown will fit properly.
After that, we’ll take impressions of your tooth, which will be sent to a dental lab to create a custom crown. A temporary crown will be placed while we wait for your permanent one to be made.
Once your permanent crown is ready, you’ll return to Sunshine Dental, where your dentist will check the fit and secure it into place.
Bridge Procedure
Getting a bridge is similar to the crown procedure. First, we remove a small amount of enamel to prepare the surrounding teeth.
Impressions are then taken, and a custom bridge is created in a dental lab. In the meantime, we’ll place a temporary bridge to protect the area.
When your custom bridge is ready, you’ll return to have it placed. Your dentist will check that the fit is perfect before permanently cementing the bridge in place, filling the gap, and restoring the function of your smile.
Aftercare for Crowns & Bridges
Proper care after your crown or bridge procedure is key to maintaining the longevity of your restoration and prioritizing the health of your surrounding teeth. Here’s what you need to know:
- Oral hygiene: Continue brushing and flossing your teeth, but be gentle around the newly restored area. Maintaining healthy gums and teeth is important to keep your crowns and bridges healthy.
- Avoid hard foods: Immediately after your procedure, try to avoid eating hard or sticky foods until your new restoration feels comfortable.
- Regular checkups: Visit us regularly for dental checkups and cleanings. Your dentist will monitor the health of your crowns, bridges, and the surrounding teeth to check that everything is in good condition.
Turnaround Times
While every patient’s treatment plan is tailored to their needs, here’s a general idea of what you can expect:
- Crowns: The entire process typically takes 2 visits, with the first one involving tooth preparation, impressions or scans and X-rays, and the second visit to place the final crown once it has been created in a dental lab.
- Bridges: Like crowns, bridges typically require 2 visits—one for preparation and impressions or scans and X-rays and a follow-up to place the final bridge.
